Youth looking for employment can now access learning and work opportunities on government’s newly launched portal, SAYouth.
The SAYouth initiative is part of Cyril Ramaphosa’s Presidential Youth Employment Intervention Project. It is supported by the Harambee Youth Accelerator Programme, the labour and education departments, the National Youth Development Agency as well as the Development bank of South Africa.
The Presidential Youth Employment Intervention project, which was set up earlier in the year, is one of the government’s mechanisms to tackle and set out priority actions to address youth unemployment. It aims to create work opportunities for more than 800,000 South Africans.
According to the website, SAYouth is a 100% free opportunity for young unemployed South Africans to connect to work through a range of services and work readiness training opportunities.
Applicants can register on sayouth.datafree.co for different learning and volunteering opportunities and can apply for learnerships or apprenticeships and full time or part time jobs.
The portal caters only for South African youth between the ages of 15 to 34. Young people who join from the age of 15 will improve their employability over time and won’t be able to access work opportunities until they reach 18.
The initiative is the latest step by government to address youth unemployment which has been escalating at an alarming rate. According to the latest set of data by StatsSA, youth joblessness sits at over 61%.
Other recruitment and youth skills empowerment platforms convened to combat the country’s high joblessness rate among young people include Harambee and the Tshepo 1 Million initiative.
